"This is my very first pop song and seems to stand very distant from my dark ambient, sound collage, and even my hip-hop focused projects. I remember hearing the song Hopeless Romantic for the first time and hating it so much that it drove me to make an actually acceptable and good pop song out of the incredibly vague and laughably generic lyrics I was presented with. It was a challenge that I really wanted to push myself to tackle and I am very glad I did."
-Shaun Hathaway
What was initially intended to be a tongue-in-cheek cover, a gut punch, if you will, to the formulaic, vapidly vague pop of Meghan Trainor, becomes a sour, almost bittersweet, cover that gives a great emphasis to dread that underlies romanticism, especially on that of Valentine's Day. The loose, innocuous mix of punchy drum machine percussion, dreadful synthesizers, side-poking vocal snippets, and seemingly horrified choir-like vocals, makes a track that oddly borders and blurs between modern electronic pop and the synthpop, dream pop, gothic rock of the 1980s, 1990s.
